Frequently Asked Questions
What are garlic chives and how is this made?
Garlic chives are an herb with leaves that are solid and flat, which is quite different from the hollow leaves of regular chives. They are distinctly more garlic-forward in taste than common chives (often referred to as onion chives) and pack more garlic punch than our more subtle, but equally unique, Garlic Scape Powder.
Grown especially for Gourmend, our garlic chives are hand-picked, cleaned without the use of chemicals, hand-trimmed, dried and powdered within hours of picking to maintain optimal flavor, nutrient retention and years of shelf life.
What is the low FODMAP serving size?
Only trace amounts of FODMAPs were found in our Garlic Chive Powder. You're free to enjoy as much as you like!
How do I know this is low in FODMAPs?
Our proprietary seasoning has been tested by FODMAP Friendly, a trusted source for testing FODMAP levels in foods. Only trace amounts of FODMAPs were detected, so you can enjoy as much garlic chive powder as you like. A low FODMAP diet does not treat a disease but may help to meet nutritional needs with reduced gastrointestinal symptoms.
How is this different from garlic powder?
Garlic powder is made from the high FODMAP crushed bulbs of garlic plants. It contains high levels of fructans which can cause digestive distress. An herb with leaves that are solid and flat, garlic chives are low FODMAP – we dry these leaves right after picking to turn them into a unique seasoning that's low in FODMAPs.
How long will my garlic chive powder last?
Because our garlic chive powder is freeze dried to remove almost all moisture, it should maintain most of its flavor and aroma for many years. That said, as with all spices, we recommend enjoying as quickly as possible for maximum flavor.
What do I do with garlic chive powder?
If your favorite home-cooked dish calls for garlic, you don’t have to banish that flavor from your dinner table forever. Sprinkle in as much Garlic Chive Powder as you like to vegetables, soups or meats. If you have a recipe that calls for garlic powder, you can use our Garlic Chive Powder in its place. Gourmend’s Garlic Chive Powder is a certified option for low FODMAP cooking, safe at any serving size.
What are the ingredients?
Our Garlic Chive Powder is made from USDA Organic certified garlic chives, grown here in the United States. No preservatives, fillers, stabilizers or additives of any kind.
Are there any preservatives?
No, absolutely not. You won’t find any maltodextrin, preservatives, fillers, yeast, stabilizers, additives, anti-caking agents, corn starch, salt, silicon dioxide or gluten in this seasoning. Our Garlic Chive Powder is all goodness, so you can feel great about using it in your favorite recipes!
Will the powder cake or stick together?
We don’t use any preservatives or anti-caking agents, so this remains a possibility. However, because this is a freeze dried powder (meaning virtually all moisture has been removed from the product), if you store it in a dry, dark cupboard in its original glass bottle, the powder should stay loose for a very long time. We do NOT recommend placing this in the fridge.
Is your packaging environmentally friendly?
Our seasonings are packaged in glass jars. We’ve chosen glass because it is an easily recyclable, sustainable, inert material that does not leach any plastic flavors into the spice.
What if I don’t like it?
Although we cannot accept returns of food products, even if the product is unopened, it is important to us that you are happy with your purchase. If you have any concerns, contact us about our Satisfaction Guarantee at hello@gourmendfoods.com and we’ll help you find a solution!
